What Lutherans Believe ?

LUTHERANS ARE CHRISTIAN

Lutherans understand the life of Jesus to be one of teacher, healer, and Lord who comes to us to reveal God's love. In the death of Jesus we understand the undying love of God that triumphs over death and tragedy.

Lutherans further believe that Jesus is the Son of God who became human. He died and was raised from the dead so that all who believe in Him will have eternal life.

Lutherans consider humans to be both saint and sinner at the same time. We Believe that faith is a gift from God to us, and that it is the Holy Spirit that moves us to believe in a loving and saving God. God promised to pour the Holy Spirit upon us through the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist.

LUTHERANS ARE WORSHIPERS

Worship is a privilege, a duty, and a gift. The center of Lutheran worship is the Lord's Supper, also called Eucharist (which means "thanksgiving"). Other forms of Worship are part of our heritage as well. Lutheran Communion is open to all who believe.

LUTHERANS ARE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK

Lutherans believe that the Scriptures are the inspired Word of God. The Bible is the record of Salvation History and God's Redemptive intervention by Jesus the Christ.

The Scriptures are part of every Lutheran Worship and all are encouraged to center personal prayer around the Scriptures with special emphasis on the New Testament.

LUTHERANS ARE STEWARDS

Salvation, all good gifts, all of creation and all that we have are gifts from God. Salvation comes from God; what we do is our grateful response. We are called to be generous to others as God is so generous to us.

LUTHERANS SEE CHURCH AS COMMUNITY

Believing in the Communion of Saints, we confess our faith in common with the great Creeds and authentic statements of Faith. Lutherans take leadership in the ecumenical movement, basing this action on Jesus' prayer for unity the night before He died.

Lutherans believe that the Gospel is universal Good News which breaks down all barriers that divide people from one another. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) is committed to witness to the equality and unity of all. We are further committed to work to remove barriers that discriminate and divide the one human family.
